Need to keep the kids entertained on a long journey? Below are some ideas to keep your children occupied. You can read more about how to prepare for a long journey with your children in our articles section.
Who am I?
One person picks a famous person, from either the past or present, and the other occupants in the car have to guess who they are by asking questions that can be answered by 'yes' or 'no'. For example 'are you an actor' or 'are you on television?'. Once someone has guessed correctly it is their turn to pick a celebrity.
I went to the zoo and I saw... [activity sheet]
This activity sheet can be completed by anyone, but is especially good for children who are returning from a day out at a zoo or wildlife park. Click here to download the sheet. Think of an animal beginning with each letter of the alphabet, and draw a picture of that animal.
Bingo [activity sheet]
Click here to download 3 bingo cards. Each player gets a card. As players spot an object from their list, for example 'train', they yell out the name of the object and can cross that off their bingo card. First player to complete a horizontal, vertical or diagnal line on their card wins. For longer trips, players can play till someone gets a full house (all items crossed off).

The alphabet game
Pick a theme such as animals, television programmes, girls names, etc. Working through the alphabet, take it in turns to name something beginning with each letter. For example, if your theme is animals, 'anaconda, bear, cat, dog, elephant', etc. No repetition is allowed.

As above, pick a theme. Instead of working your way from a-z, players must name an object which starts with the last letter of the object the previous player named. For example if the previous player had said 'bear' the next player would say 'rabbit', etc.
The theme song game
Players take it in turns to hum the theme tune of a television show and other players have to guess what it is.
The animal game
Players have to look out for animals and gain points based on the difficulty of the animal that was spotted. For example dogs-1, cats-2, horse-3, cow-4. Agree on the point system before hand, based on where your journey is taking you and whether you will be travelling mostly through the town or countryside. To stop the game getting boring, set a target number of points that players should compete to reach, for instance 10 points.
My mum went to a shop...
One player starts off the game by saying 'my mum went to a shop and she bought' and then adds an item beginning with 'a'. For example 'my mum went to a shop and she bought apples'. The next player has to add an item to the list beginning with the letter 'b', for instance 'my mum went to the shop and she bought apples and bananas'. Players carry on working their way through the alphabet and trying to remember what previous items players have named.
